about

Solar Tide is an entire album of B-sides from the Lunar Tide sessions. These sessions lasted from 2013 until 2015 and spanned the end of my time in Northeast Ohio to my move to Brooklyn. I wrote more music in this period of my life than I have before or since. There's probably more than another album's worth of songs that aren't good enough, are recorded too poorly, or are too incomplete to release.

These 11 songs came to the light of day because of a miraculous hard drive resuscitation which yielded the motherlode of demos which I thought I had permanently lost. Inspired by this, I quickly decided to put together a track list (I think it was already floating around in my subconscious), and do the best mix and master I could on these demo quality recordings.

A lot of these songs are frankly better than some that made the cut for Lunar Tide. I think I felt some unconscious pressure to make a record that had a certain sound to it...eight years later, I'm not even sure what that sound was supposed to be. A Brooklyn sound, I guess; not an Ohio sound.

Conversely, this collection contains some of my favorite musical moments put to metaphorical tape, such as the cymbal solo in the outro of Old Windows. Lake Shore Park might be one of the best songs I've written in every sense. Sail To Mast might be the ideal culmination of my youthful taste for hard prog rock.

Another interesting note is that a lot of musical motifs and lyrics from Lunar Tide can be found in these songs. Solar Tide acts as a sort of alternate universe version of Lunar Tide. It's truly a companion album, not just a collection of B-sides.

At any rate, I'm very excited to release these here in the best form I can give them: demo recordings treated with the best mixing and mastering work I've done to date. I hope you enjoy.
